directly linked to women's low social status. </span><st1:country-region style="font-family: Calibri;" w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:country-region><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "calibri";">'s
poor position internationally is seen in UNDP's Gender related Development
Index (GDI) 2000, where </span><st1:country-region style="font-family: Calibri;" w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "calibri";">
currently ranks 135 out of 174 countries. On the Gender Empowerment Measurement
(GEM) 1999, </span><st1:country-region style="font-family: Calibri;" w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "calibri";">
ranked 100 out of the 102 countries measured. In terms of health status, the
figures are galling. Some 30,000 women die each year due to complications of pregnancy,
and 10 times more women develop life-long, pregnancy-related disability. Rural
women's health is generally poorest due to the lack of health facilities and
skilled health providers. For example, the maternal mortality ratio in
predominantly rural Balochistan is 800 maternal deaths to 100,000 live births,
compared to the national average of 340 per 100,000.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";">The untimely death or disability of a
woman, a tragedy in itself, adversely affects the health of her children,
household productivity and the national economy. About 25 percent of children
are born with low birth weight due to maternal problems. Ten percent of
children do not reach their first birthday. High fertility, with an average of
six children per woman, has resulted in high population growth of three percent
per annum. Consequently, improving women's reproductive health through the use
of contraceptives and spacing of children will not only improve women's health
but also reduce population growth and allow women more time to pursue economic
activities.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";">There are also marked differences between
the health status of women and men in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region>. For example, malnutrition
is a major public health problem in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region> that disproportionately
affects women and girls. More girls than boys die between the ages of 1 and 4;
in fact the female mortality rate here is 12 percent higher than for boys. This
is a direct consequence of the lower social status accorded to women and girls,
who as a result tend to eat less and face additional barriers when accessing
health care. Women, girls and infants most often die of common communicable
diseases such as tuberculosis, diarrhea, pneumonia and tetanus, which could
have been easily prevented and treated. The high prevalence of communicable
diseases and malnutrition is not only related to poor living conditions, but
also to the lower social status of women and girls. In addition, because of
social stigma and gender norms, as many as fifty percent of women suffer from
recurrent reproductive tract infections. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";">Consequently, poor women's health in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region> is as
much a social as medical problem. Underlying factors here are the lack of
awareness of, and attention to, women's health needs; women's lower education
and social status; and social constraints on women and girls, including the
practice of seclusion. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

but highly unpopular President Asif Ali Zardari signed the so-called 18th
amendment to the country's constitution last month. The long-awaited bill,
applauded for stripping the presidency of its sweeping powers, strengthened
provincial autonomy and handed over control of key public sector services,
including health, to the country's four provinces.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
This development, argue health professionals, politicians,
and women's rights activists, could potentially improve women's health, which
is neglected in this deeply patriarchal country, where public health care
facilities are largely inadequate or, in some areas, altogether absent.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“One of the basic benefits of devolution of health down to
the provinces is stricter control, as smaller units are better managed, and
there will be increased control when provincial capitals, rather than
Islamabad, look over programmes”, Mian Raza Rabbani, chairman of the 18th
amendment committee and a senator from the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party, tells
<i>The Lancet</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Others tend to agree. Some Pakistani women, especially in the poor
countryside, live their entire lives, through multiple pregnancies and
childbirths, without ever seeing a doctor. In this climate, argues Rozina
Karmaliani, interim dean of the school of nursing at the <st1:placename w:st="on">Aga
Khan</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Karachi</st1:place></st1:city>, devolution could
improve access to health care. “There are a lot of access issues related to
women and child rights. The 18th amendment could improve efficiency and
access”, she says.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Samrina Hashmi, an obstetrician and gynaecologist says:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“With the devolution of power, the power and the money will come down to the
basic levels”, says Samrina Hashmi, an obstetrician and gynaecologist based in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Karachi</st1:city></st1:place> and a member of
the women's rights organisation Women's Action Forum. “If the provincial
government is giving out money to provincial centres, it will easily control
management and solve problems…Controlling the employees and making them work
would be easy. Hopefully, this will bring positive change in our health-care
system and maternal health as well.”<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";">The health indicators of women in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region> are
among the worst in the world.<sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Pakistan#cite_note-adb_wom_pak-1"><span style="color: windowtext;">[2]</span></a></sup> Intra-household bias in food
distribution leads to nutritional deficiencies among female children. Early
marriages of girls, excessive childbearing, lack of control over their own
bodies, and a high level of illiteracy adversely affect women's health. More
than 40 percent of the total female population are anemic<sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Pakistan#cite_note-adb_wom_pak-1"><span style="color: windowtext;">[2]</span></a></sup>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">According to 1998 figures, the female
infant mortality rate was higher than that of male children. The maternal
mortality rate is also high high, as only 20 percent of women are assisted by a
trained provider during delivery.<sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Pakistan#cite_note-adb_wom_pak-1"><span style="color: windowtext;">[2]</span></a></sup> Only 9 percent of the women used
contraceptives in 1985, however this figure has increased substantially.<sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Pakistan#cite_note-adb_wom_pak-1"><span style="color: windowtext;">[2]</span></a></sup><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">Women are also at a higher risk of
contracting <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV" title="HIV"><span style="color: windowtext;">HIV</span></a>-<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS" title="AIDS"><span style="color: windowtext;">AIDS</span></a>
and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) because of male dominance in sex
relations and lack of access to information.<sup><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Pakistan#cite_note-adb_wom_pak-1"><span style="color: windowtext;">[2]</span></a></sup><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Pakistan</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span style="font-family: "calibri";"> has taken certain initiatives in the health sector
to redress gender imbalances. The SAP was launched in 1992–1993 to accelerate
improvement in the social indicators. Closing the gender gap is the foremost
objective of the SAP. The other major initiative is the Prime Minister's
program of lady health workers (LHWs). Under this community-based program, 26,584
LHWs in rural areas and 11,967 LHWs in urban areas have been recruited1 to
provide basic health care including family planning to women at the grassroots
level. Other initiatives include the village-based family planning workers and
extended immunization programs, nutritional and child survival, cancer
treatment, and increased involvement of media in health education.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Given that Ramadan will be in the summer (for the next...ten years or
so), it is an opportune time to take advantage of the fact that you
can't eat or drink until late. It is the perfect time to read the Qur'an
during all those hours of waiting to eat. It should be quite easy, in
fact, to finish recitation of the entire Qur'an during Ramadan. Read up
on the life story of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), or that
book by Dr. Tariq Ramadan that you have been meaning to read but had,
heretofore, no time to finish. Spend more time with the children; figure
out how to have a good time without eating and drinking. Yes, it may
not be the greatest that you can't eat until 8 PM, but make some
lemonade out of those lemons. (Just make sure you drink it after
sunset!)<br />

Like it or not, Ramadan is during summer now, and so be mindful of
the heat and humidity. If you are tired during the day, do not hesitate
to take a nap and rest. After sunset, make sure you drink plenty of
fluids and stay well hydrated during the night. Try to avoid very salty
foods so as to not be excessively thirsty during the next day. As a
doctor, I would recommend avoiding any strenuous physical activity while
fasting, if at all possible. And again, most importantly, if fasting
causes you to become ill, do not continue, and seek medical help
immediately. Islamic law has outlined alternatives to fasting for those
who cannot fast due to medical or other reasons.<br />

It never ceases to amaze me how much food and drink takes up our

advantage of this: recite scripture, repeat the Names of God, learn
about the faith, deepen the bond with God. Come out of Ramadan better
than when you started it. This is the whole purpose of the fast as the

Another must have item on the dining table is yogurt. Contrary to popular belief yogurt does not increase cholesterol but keeps it in check. A bowl of yogurt everyday keeps the body healthy and vitalised all the while improving intestinal and ulcer health. It also quenches thirst, thus making it the ideal form of dairy good to have. If you are not a fan of yogurt, then you should definitely have milk so that you don't feel low or clumsy during the day.<br />
You can also have bananas at sehri as they offer an excellent source of potassium and vitamin B6. They are enriched with fiber and carbohydrates which will keep you fresh and will sustain your energy for a longer time. <br />WASHINGTON: US doctors hailed a complex operation as a world first after performing a skull and scalp transplant on a cancer patient who also received a new kidney and pancreas during the procedure.<br />James Boysen, a 55-year-old software developer, underwent 15 hours of surgery performed with the help of more than 50 medical professionals, the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston said on Thursday.<br />It said that the historic surgery made Boysen the “first patient to receive the simultaneous craniofacial tissue transplant together with solid organ transplants.”<br />The operation, performed at Houston Methodist Hospital, was conceptualized almost four years ago, but wasn’t carried out until May 22, some 20 hours after doctors were told appropriate organs had become available.<br />“This was a very complex surgery because we had to transplant the tissues utilizing microsurgery,” said Michael Klebuc, lead surgeon from the Houston Methodist Hospital plastic surgery team that helped perform the skull-scalp transplant.<br />“Imagine connecting blood vessels 1/16 of an inch under a microscope with tiny stitches about half the diameter of a human hair being done with tools that one would use to make a fine Swiss watch," he said.<br />Boysen, a resident of Austin, was diagnosed with leucotomy sarcoma, a rare cancer that attacks smooth muscle, on his scalp in 2006.<br />The cancer was treated successfully but left a large wound on his scalp and skull.<br />The Texas man, who was also diagnosed with diabetes at age five, had undergone a previous double-organ kidney and pancreas transplant in 1992, but those organs were needing transplanting again.<br />Because of his skull and scalp wounds, however, that procedure was not possible. Meanwhile his kidney and pancreas issues and the immune suppression medications he was on because of them, made scalp reconstruction difficult.<br />Doctors solved the dilemma by carrying out all procedures at once. -AFP<br /></div>

An expert panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted today to approve a drug that has been dubbed the "female Viagra" after two previous attempts failed to gain approval.<br />

The FDA is set to make a final decision in August, and while the agency generally follows to the panelists' vote, it is not bound to adhere to it.<br />
<br />
Medical experts from the FDA examined the evidence on the effectiveness of the drug flibanserin, designed to help per-menopausal women with Hypo active Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD).<br />
<br />
This is the third time the drug has been presented to the FDA, after previous attempts to get the drug approved failed in part due to the agency having concerns about whether its benefits outweighed the risks.<br />
<br />
A mother and her daughter were among those to offer emotional testimony to the FDA panel today. The mother, Barbara, talked about how her relationships with her husband and family became strained because of her lack of a sex drive. She said she was diagnosed with HSDD and told the panel that she was "so relieved to know this was not my fault." She was on the clinical trial and said the results were dramatic, "no negative side effects, just good ones, really good ones."<br />

The drug works by manipulating chemicals in the brain to try and induce sexual desire and was originally designed as an antidepressant.<br />

Early studies showed the drug helped women have more "satisfying sexual events," the FDA stated in a summary released before the meeting, but those who took the drug also faced multiple side effects, including nausea, dizziness, fatigue and fainting -- though very rare, according to proponents. During the early testing, the drug failed to show improvement in the key outcome of improving sexual desire. In addition, long-term effects from a drug taken every single day are a big unknown and one that may still give the FDA pause.<br />

The drug is produced by the pharmaceutical company Sprout. Cindy Whitehead, the founder and COO of the Raleigh, North Carolina-based company, has been fighting to get the drug approved for four years.<br />
<br />
"There are 25 approved drugs for some form of male sexual dysfunction, but still a great big zero for the most common form of FSD [female sexual dysfunction]," Whitehead said in an interview with ABC News last year. "No matter how or why we got here, we're here, and we've got to come up with a solution for it."<br />
<br />
The drug targets an issue more complicated than the physiological issue that men with erectile dysfunction face, according to gynecologist Dr. Lauren Streicher.<br />
<br />
HSDD "is a very specific problem in a woman who doesn't think about sex, she doesn't fantasize, she doesn't desire sex," Streicher told ABC News last year. "What makes it different is that it's distressing to her. This has a negative impact on her. She's worried about it, she's frustrated."</div>

NEW YORK: Diets rich in fructose, carbohydrate derived from fruit and vegetables, may lead to a significant <a href="http://ahealthyminds.blogspot.com/search/label/Weight%20Gain" target="_blank">weight gain,</a> physical inactivity and body fat deposition, a new research has found. Many soft drinks and processed baked goods contain high-fructose corn syrup. The researchers designed this study based on the intake of fructose by adolescents in the US.<br />
“Our study suggests that such levels of fructose can indeed play a role in <a href="http://ahealthyminds.blogspot.com/search/label/Weight%20Gain" target="_blank">weight gain</a>, favor fat deposition, and also contribute to physical inactivity,” said Justin Rhodes, professor of psychology at University of Illinois in the US.<br />
“The link between increases in sugar intake, particularly fructose, and the rising obesity epidemic has been debated for many years with no clear conclusions,” lead author of the study Catarina Rendering from University of Illinois said.<br />
So the researchers studied two groups of mice for two-and-a-half months: one group was fed a diet in which 18 percent of the calories came from fructose, mimicking the intake of adolescents in the United States, and the other was fed 18 per cent from glucose.<br />
“The important thing to note is that animals in both experimental groups had the usual intake of calories for a mouse,” Rendeiro said.<br />
They were not eating more than they should, and both groups had exactly the same amount of calories deriving from sugar, the only difference was the type of sugar, either fructose or glucose<br />
The results showed that the fructose-fed mice displayed significantly increased body weight, liver mass, and fat mass in comparison to the glucose-fed mice.<br />
Remarkably, the researchers also found that not only were the fructose-fed mice <a href="http://ahealthyminds.blogspot.com/search/label/Weight%20Gain" target="_blank">gaining weigh</a>t, they were also less active.<br />

New Delhi, June 5, 2015 (AFP) -India«s food safety regulator on Friday banned Nestle from making and selling its hugely popular Maggi instant noodles, calling them "unsafe" and "hazardous" after tests found they contained excessive lead.<br />
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it was ordering Nestle to halt manufacturing after tests by some states found lead levels above statutory limits.<br />
Nestle, which denies the charges and says the noodles are safe to eat, had already announced it was pulling the product from sale as it seeks to contain growing safety concerns.<br />
An FSSAI statement said it was ordering Nestle India to "withdraw and recall all the nine approved variants of its Maggi Instant Noodles from the market... and stop further production".<br />
It said tests had found the noodles to be "unsafe and hazardous for human consumption".<br />
Nestle, which says the lead content in its Maggi noodles is well below the limit, had already announced it would withdraw the product from sale as it tries to contain the growing scandal.<br />
On Friday its global chief executive Paul Bulcke said the product was "safe for consumption".<br />
"We decided to take off the noodles from the shelves as there was confusion about the safety," he said at a press conference in New Delhi.<br />
"The safety of our consumers is paramount. We are working with the authorities to clear up this confusion."<br />
At least six states including India«s capital have announced temporary bans on the sale of the instant noodles in the past few days, after officials said test results showed high lead levels.<br />
The FSSAI said the presence of lead "beyond permissible levels" could make the product "unsafe and hazardous", citing risks of damage to the kidneys and the nervous system.<br />
Activists in the eastern city of Kolkata on Thursday burned packets of the noodles in protest, underscoring the scale of public anger.<br />
Nestle has been selling its Maggi brand for over three decades in India, and has 80 percent of the country«s instant noodle market.<br />

The product -- marketed as a quick and healthy snack -- grew increasingly popular as more and more Indians moved away from their homes to study or seek work.<br />
It emerged as one of India«s five most trusted brands in a consumer survey conducted last year.<br />
Several celebrities have endorsed Maggi over the years, including Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.<br />
The scare met with a mix of outrage and disappointment in India, where it was one of the top trending topics on Twitter on Friday.<br />
Many users welcomed the ban and the best-selling novelist Chetan Bhagat tweeted that Maggi was "junk being sold as emotional nectar to Indians daily".<br />
Others defended the product and said they had been eating it for decades with no ill effects.<br />
"My work often involves travel and odd hours, which over the years made Maggi my favourite snack," 30-year-old IT worker Puneet Raheja told AFP.<br />
"I think that this controversy will soon blow over."<br />
The scare began when food inspectors in Uttar Pradesh said they had found high lead levels in two dozen Maggi noodle packets during routine testing, along with the flavour enhancer MSG (monosodium glutamate), which is not listed in the ingredients.<br />
The state last weekend filed a criminal complaint against Nestle India over the findings, while a separate legal petition was filed against Bollywood stars who have advertised the noodles.<br />
Nestle has said it does not use MSG in its Maggi products sold in India, but that glutamate is a naturally occurring substance and may be present in some of the ingredients.<br />
The FSSAI said Nestle had disputed the conclusions on the basis that the noodles and flavouring were tested separately, even though they are consumed together.<br />
Shares in Nestle India, the subsidiary of the Swiss giant, fell nine per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday as the crisis escalated.<br />
The company, which markets a huge range of food items from Nescafe instant coffee to KitKat bars, said Maggi noodles would return to the market "as soon as the current situation is clarified".<br />

WASHINGTON: Early antiviral treatment after diagnosis of HIV infection significantly reduces the likelihood of getting AIDS or other serious illnesses, according to results from a large international clinical trial published on Wednesday.<br />
The study was presented a year earlier than planned after preliminary data showed that people who received treatment from diagnosis were 53 per cent less likely to die or develop a serious illness such as AIDS compared to a control group where treatment began later when the immune system is weakened.<br />
Researchers said this data combined with previous studies showing that antiviral drugs help prevent HIV transmission to healthy sexual partners indicate that such treatment is beneficial for everyone diagnosed with the virus.<br />
The study began in 2011 in 35 countries with 4,684 HIV-infected men and women over the age of 18.<br />
An estimated 35 million people are infected with HIV worldwide, while only 13 million people get treatment, according to the latest figures.<br />
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already recommends starting antiviral after HIV diagnosis. -AFP<br />
